Thousands attend Rutgers career day

NEW BRUNSWICK -- The job market for 2007 college graduates was looking good as Rutgers University's semiannual New Jersey Collegiate Career Day drew thousands of job-seekers and hundreds of employers Jan. 4. An estimated 2,500 to 3000 candidates, the majority dressed in formal black business suits and shiny shoes, searched for jobs and internships in a show of how well the state's economy is doing, said Richard White, Rutgers director of career services. "One of the great things about this event is it really reflects the workplace in New Jersey at any given time," White said. "2007 will be a very good year to graduate college." More than 250 firms -- retailers, nonprofits, engineers and financial institutions -- greeted soon-to-be college graduates, career-changers and displaced workers, and still more employers who wanted display booths were placed on a waiting list....

After moving from Argenta to Las Vegas to find a job nearly a year ago, 39-year-old musician Shawn Balding was surprised to find work so fast - in three days."Just that quick," Balding said. "It was fast."Balding found out from a friend about the Las Vegas-based Full Throttle Blues Band needing a guitar player. After displaying his talent, the band was quick to ask him to join the band full-time.A professional musician for more than 20 years, Balding is enjoying his busy musical career being part of a band, venturing solo and working as a sound engineer for some of music industry's greats.As a sound engineer, Balding has worked with such artists as Brian Wilson from The Beach Boys, Garth Brooks and Kenny Chesney. Harrison students, officials protest payment slowdown

Officials at Harrison Career Institute restated a claim that the U.S. Department of Education seeks to "destroy" the privately owned vocational school by withholding $1.8 million in federal student aid money. On Monday, a dozen administrators, teachers and students went public with their support for their school and its future. Harrison, also known as HCI, has been battling with the federal government since last year when the U.S. Department of Education accused the school of financial aid fraud. The school denies the charge and is fighting it. Now, HCI may lose its academic accreditation, an action that would end all of its participation in any federal student aid programs. Meanwhile, school officials say HCI is struggling to keep operating day by day and needs money it is owed under a prearranged agreement with the U.S....

Career Education 3Q Profit Falls

Post-secondary education operator Career Education Corp. said Tuesday its third-quarter profit fell 62 percent, hurt by declining student numbers. Net income dropped to $20.7 million, or 22 cents per share, from $54.9 million, or 53 cents per share, in the prior-year period. Total revenue slipped to $462.4 million from $497.5 million. Earnings include an expense of $3.9 million, or 4 cents per share, for stock-based compensation. Wall Street, on average, expected profit of 28 cents per share on sales of $452 million, according to an analyst poll by Thomson Financial. The company said it had cash and equivalents of $444.5 million as of Sept. 30, up from $378 million at the end of June. Career Education said its overall student population fell to 99,600 as of Oct....
